Off My Face-Book

I haven’t disguised my dislike of Facebook for some time. I hate the way it can seduce you into wasting so much time… that I could have been doing something useful or rewarding than seeing what Bob had for breakfast or how many points Carol scored at online poker. I hate the way it can be used for bullying by teens. I hate the guilt when people I know want to be ‘friends’ but I don’t want to play. I hate that Zuckerberg and co ‘own’ your content – and that what you post now may come back to haunt you down the track. And I hate the fact that the technology is there for Facebook to track where you travel on the web, even though you have logged out of FB.
Yes, I know there is a free software application called Facebook Disconnect – but what info do they get from me (either through the app or by downloading Google Chrome to install). I do enjoy being able to check out Dear Daughter’s travel photos and am flattered that she invited me into her social networking world… but I sort of feel as though I am intruding on her private life, similar to reading her ‘diary’ or eavesdropping on a phonecall. I simply prefer online communication via blog, email, Skype or forum. Enough rant for now!

Rant away. FB gives new meaning to the books 1984 and Brave New World. Not — perish the thought — that FB has any designs on world dominance.
